Berwick Hills District Centre was a run down collection of 1960’s public buildings in the heart of the community of East Middlesbrough.
This major urban renewal scheme, the key project in Middlesbrough’s City Challenge programme, involved the demolition of all the existing buildings on site.
The new centre comprised the construction of a new 78,000sqft supermarket, new retail units, swimming pool, housing office, library, community centre and health centre.
The development involved a complex land assembly process requiring the relocation of the existing church and Salvation Army Worship Hall to new buildings off site.
This flagship project integrating public and private funding was undertaken in partnership with Middlesbrough Council and English Partnerships. The project received £6m of public funds out of a total of over £20m.
